How to do a water cut

For a lot of athletes that compete in sports where weight is a factor they will often do some form of a weight cut in order to make weight.

I am a National level Powerlifter. In my federation you have a two hour window after you weigh in. A lot of athletes will do water cuts between 7-14 pounds to make weight.

The process includes greatly increasing your water and sodium intake. The excess sodium will help your body retain the water. After the loading period you often cut out foods high in fiber, sodium and carbs then eventually you will stop drinking water completely. The dehydration window will differ for different athletes and everyone reacts to water cuts differently as-well.

Sometimes athletes will also need to sweat out extra pounds if they didn’t make weight from just doing the water cut. Some methods include hot baths, showers, sauna and bundling up with heating pads. Check out these 7 tips which will help if you are cutting for a meet.

In the video below you will see what I went through in my 7 day practice water cut
