Function
You may not realize but your abs are a muscle which is almost always working. Whether you are running, jumping or moving furniture your abs work with corresponding muscles to maintain stability. When your legs work your abs have to contract to keep your core stable. Since the function of your abs is to help stabilize your body it is important to train them using exercises which improve stabilization. This is one of the reasons I stay away from exercises like crunches. Training your abs in a functional manner is especially important for athletes as you have to perform a multitude of different movements effectively and efficiently.
