Common Cardio Machine Mistakes
Cardio machines can be very useful especially when conditions outside are not optimal. With that being said it is still important to use the equipment properly.
The biggest cardio machine mistake I see sometimes on the treadmill or StairMaster is leaning on the equipment! Why is this so bad? When going for a walk or run outside there is no rail to lean or hold onto. This is not very practical. Additionally, it puts the body in a bad mechanical position where you may be rounding your back or slouching as you walk or run. This also creates bad movement patterns as you are training the body to move in an improper way.
For simplicity when on cardio machines think – Do I currently have a healthy posture which will translate well to everyday activities.

Treadmill Common Errors
Resting your arms on the side rails or on the front of the treadmill. It is now supporting some of your weight and taking from your workout. Additionally, some people strides are too vertical, they are jumping and bounding with each step as opposed to focusing on a smooth stride. Exaggerating the up and down while running on the treadmill will put even more stress on your joints.
Stationary Bike Common Errors
Adjust the seat to your height! So many people will just hop on and peddle away while being uncomfortable. If the seat is too low it will add more stress to your knees if it’s too high it will be hard to stay stable on the bike.
Stairmaster
Like the Treadmill one of the most common errors is resting your arms on the machine which puts the body in a bad position and takes away from the exercise.
If you rely on cardio machines, make sure you use them properly! Or find other alternatives, get outside, take the stairs and get creative with your cardio workouts.
