Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) What is it?
The minimum number of calories your body needs to survive is the basal metabolic rate. An Example would be if you sat on the couch or stayed in bed all day the amount of calories you would burn. BMR is how many calories your organs require to function without any type of activity.
Factors like increasing muscle mass can change your basal metabolic rate as it takes more energy to maintain. In general the rate stays fairly constant because it is based on involuntary functions like breathing.
Importance
BMR can be used to determine how many calories you burn a day. This can help you when it comes to meal prepping and planning. You can find out how many calories you would need to put on more muscle, maintain weight or lose fat.
BMR vs RMR
RMR stands for resting metabolic rate. This includes energy used when daily non exercise movements occur such as digestions. This is different from BMR as BMR only measures the basics like breathing, temperature and circulation.
