We are covering the components of physical fitness
Primary
Aerobic and Cardiovascular
- The capacity of the body to take in and utilize oxygen (O2). Includes the ability to get rid of carbon dioxide (CO2)
– this includes endurance, strength and power activities.
The major Benefits include improving the ability for your heart to effectively send out oxygen throughout the body. A common test to measure aerobic capacity is the VO2 max test which measures the volume of oxygen you can take in.
Body Composition
- Compares the ratio of fat free mass (bones, blood, organs and fluid) to fat mass (adipose tissue).
- Increased muscle tissue creates an increased metabolic rate and an increase in the number of calories burned while at rest.
– The average body fat for Women is around 20%
-The average body fat for men is around 15%
Flexibility
- Range of motion of your joints
– mobility can help to reduce injury during exercise and help you to effectively move through movements.
Muscular Strength & Endurance
- Hows your stamina/how long can you last? Endurance is the ability of a muscle to keep a contraction, or repeat a contraction over a period of time.
- Strength is the ability of the muscle to produce a maximum tension in a short period of time (a couple seconds)
Secondary Components of Fitness
- Balance- the ability to maintain a specific body position in stationary or dynamic situations
- Coordination – the capability to use all body parts together in order to produce fluid motions
- Agility- changing directions effectively and effeciently
- Reaction time – how long it takes to respond to stimulus
- Speed- how fast or quick you can move
- Power -measures explosive strength, incorporates force and velocity
- Mental Capability – capacity to concentrate and focus during activity (getting into the zone)
