How can a powerlifter maintain strength during lockdowns?
If you are serious about your sport you need to start thinking of a contingency plan. Furthermore, you can’t solely rely on the gym and should start to think about other methods of training
- Start to invest in home gym equipment
- Do your research
- Split costs with a family member or close friend
- Hire a coach
- Purchase a workout plan
When lockdowns started we all here everyone saying how you can resort to at home workouts. There are definitely at home workouts you can do with limited equipment that can help. When it comes down to it if you are not working with loads at a high enough intensity you are not going to get stronger! You will lose strength doing solely bodyweight exercises.
How to purchase gym equipment for powerlifting
We all know gym equipment is expensive! But if you want to learn how to powerlift during quarantine you will need to invest in something. Here is what you need to purchase first:
- Gym mats to protect your floor
- Barbell
- Ideally a squat rack that can be used as a bench
- Bench
- Weights
With this basic equipment you will have enough to squat, bench and deadlift. Plus there are many accessory exercises you can do with just a barbell and some weight!
Places to look for equipment?
If you buy all of your equipment new prices can add-up. I would recommend looking for used equipment, checking out facilities that may have recently closed and doing some digging so that you don’t buy the first thing you see on google

- Fitness stores in your region
If you go through each of those avenues you are bound to find some deals and savings on gym equipment which will it make it much more affordable when stocking up your home gym.
I don’t have space in my home or apartment
This is a common problem for individuals looking to start a home gym that don’t have a basement or garage to store their equipment. If this is you how can you powerlift during quarantine?
If you are serious about it find space. As we defined earlier you do not need to equip a whole gym. We are just looking for the basics to maintain strength.
